Köan

A farmer carrying his fruits to market and a traveler from afar met on the road. "Good day to you, farmer!" called the traveler.

"And a good day to you," said the farmer, "but why do you judge me a farmer? For the making of judgments upon others does not sit well with me."

The traveler smiled apologetically. "I had, so I thought, discerned your profession from your sack of fruits, your rough clothing, and the excrement upon your feet. Was I mistaken?"

"You were correct," the farmer confirmed. "Nevertheless, I do not appreciate being judged, so I ask that you refrain from doing so in the future."

"I will respect your wish," said the traveler, bringing her staff squarely down upon the farmer's back. He fell to the ground, and she helped herself to the best of the fruits from his sack.

"How can you treat me so ill, yet speak of respect?" cried the crippled farmer. "You have judged me unworthy of my health and my belongings!"

"Nay," the traveler dismissed as she took her leave. "Had I judged you, I surely would have found you worthy of both."
